Toluene Bioremediation by Using Geotextile-Layered Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRBs)

چکیده

Sources of contamination in a subsurface environment are petrol, diesel fuel, gasoline at oil refineries, underground storage tanks, transmission pipelines, and different industries. The permeable reactive barrier (PRB) is promising technology to remediate groundwater in-situ. In this study, synthetic samples containing toluene treated three reactor columns by biological processes. PRB-1 consisted sand gravel as media, microbial inoculum (bioaugmentation—BA), nutrients (biostimulation—BS); PRB-2 inoculum, nutrients, 12 layers nonwoven geotextile fabrics; PRB-3 only media (natural attenuation—NA). This study was conducted assess the impact fabric filter, bioaugmentation, biostimulation on degradation efficiency. After 167 days treatment, biodegradation efficiencies varied between 88.2% 93.8% for PRB 1, 98.0% 99.3% 2, 14.2% 68.6% 3. effluent concentrations were less than guideline value (0.7 mg/L) World Health Organization. Reaction rate data fitted with first-order kinetic reaction model. showed that removal efficiency layered combined BA BS process significantly higher compared other processes tested. lab-scale introduced new configuration suitable remediation sites contaminated toluene.

Assessment of Converter Sludge from Esfahan Steel Company as a Persulfate Nano-Activator for Permeable Reactive Barriers (Prbs) in Landfill Leachate Treatment

The present research studies the performance of Converter Sludge (CL)as a nano-activator of persulfate (PS) in Permeable Reactive Barrier (PRB) as an in-situ technology for leachate treatment. In batch experiments, the acidic conditions (pH = 3) have been the most suitable for removal operations, where COD and NH3 removal efficiencies are 69.15% and 60.96%, respectively. Remediation of RDX- and HMX-contaminated groundwater using organic mulch permeable reactive barriers.

Organic mulch is a complex organic material that is typically populated with its own consortium of microorganisms. The organisms in mulch breakdown complex organics to soluble carbon, which can then be used by these and other microorganisms as an electron donor for treating RDX and HMX via reductive pathways. A bench-scale treatability study with organic mulch was conducted for the treatment of...

Long-term Performance of Permeable Reactive Barriers Using Zero-valent Iron: An Evaluation at Two Sites

The permeable reactive barrier (PRB) technology is an in-situ approach for remediating groundwater contamination that combines subsurface fluid flow management with a passive chemical treatment zone. Removal of contaminants from a groundwater plume is achieved by altering chemical conditions in the plume as it moves through the reactive barrier. Because the reactive barrier approach is a passiv...
